Tutwiler-Communion Dec 2016

Holy Communion also known as the Lord’s Supper represents God’s expression of His love for His people. When we take communion we use the bread which represents the body of Jesus that was beaten and scourged during and before His crucifixion and the cup which represents His shed blood for us.

As we prepare to take communion, we should remember that we are taking it in remembrance of Jesus. We should remember the cross and what Jesus has done for us. Think on His love for us. We should come in reverence, honesty and joy. Communion is an ideal time to make a commitment or recommitment to Jesus to obey.

We should look within ourselves and ask Holy Spirit to show us any areas of our lives that may not be pleasing to God and repent of our sins.

Also, we should look ahead. Scriptures say to take communion until He comes again. He first came to this earth as a Suffering Servant, but the next time He will come as a conquering King, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Communion reminds us that Jesus will come again.

The Lord’s Supper is like having dinner with Jesus. When we take it and receive it in faith, we receive benefits and spiritual nourishment to better serve Him. We do it in remembrance of Him, His love and what He has done for us.

John 6:56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me and I in him.

When we take Communion it is to taste the extent of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. It is to realize just how much His love is for us, even though we don’t deserve it. We think on the sacrifice He made by leaving heaven to suffer for our sins. He is a King in heaven and He left that for us. He spread His arms wide on the cross to bring mankind into His loving embrace. He rose again triumphantly defeating death hell and the grave, leading us into everlasting life and glory with Him.

As we eat the bread we are declaring that we are forgiven and have been made righteous. We remember the body that was broken by nails and His splintered flesh.

While we drink the cup we remember the blood that poured from His wounds from His head to His feet. We remember His suffering and through His death and resurrection He gave us eternal life in heaven with Him. It is only through His death and resurrection that we have forgiveness of sins and everlasting life.

It is only through His blood that we have right standing before God. He gave us His all, His life. No greater love exists.

Jesus is the bread of eternal life in heaven, not just the source of abundant life here on earth.

As Jesus was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum, He said the following:

John 6:32-33 Then Jesus said to them. Most assuredly I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life, He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. Everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:36-40 For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day….

John 6:47-51 Jesus said: Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever and the bread that I shall give is My flesh which I shall give for the life of the world.

John 6:53-58 Then Jesus said to them. Most assuredly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me and I in him. As the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.

1 Corinthians 11:24-26  This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper saying, This cup is the new covenant between God and you, sealed by the shedding of my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it. For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

Jesus’ purpose was to come to earth and die for us. From conception through the Holy Spirit to the blood stained cross, He came to die for us so we could be reconciled to God the Father and live with Him eternally in heaven.

God Bless. Heal the brokenhearted, bind up all their wounds.
