Bible Strong – Deadly Famine of the Word July 2018

Based on the Jeremiah Study Bible

 The prophet Amos warned:

Amos 8:11-12 Behold the days are coming, says the Lord God that I will send a famine on the land. Not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord. They shall wonder from sea to sea and from north to east. They shall run to and fro seeking the word of the Lord but shall not find it.

This famine is a problem with our ears not our stomach’s. We may well be in a hearing famine in this generation.

For centuries God’s Word has been at the center of church preaching. Today the questioning of Scripture is rampant even in some major faith communities. People want to filter what God’s Word says through culture filters of the day instead of the other way around.

Christians once understood that we don’t stand in judgment of the Bible, it stands in judgment of us. Many today are airbrushing the Word of God to make it palatable to those who want spirituality that costs nothing. Instead of being conformed to the image of Christ we want to conform His image and everything else in Scripture to our sad conditions.

When we try to figure out how we can live with confidence in this crazy chaotic world, we should be running to the Bible not away from it. When we consider the depth of human sin from God’s perspective and understand that God issues judgment only after humanity has refused His mercies, then we can better understand why God must judge those who utterly reject Him. All sin and its resulting judgment is measured against the holiness and righteousness of the Lord.

Justice must be constant in a society. Let justice run down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream. Praise You Lord God.

The sad and tragic fact is that when people turn their backs on God and His Word, He will sometimes turn His back on them, giving them over to their willful sin.

People who disregard the Bible may get what they want someday, a society where the Bible is no longer read or proclaimed and where they can freely sin without scripture confronting their conscious. A society without the moral compass of scripture will self-destruct because of moral decay and decadence.

God bless. Heal the brokenhearted, bind up all their wounds.
