The Message – Looking Back or Forward  January 2020

As we enter 2020 most of us have a mixture of feelings about 2019. There was good and there was bad things that happened. The past is useful if we learn from it and live a better life than before. We made mistakes and we all sinned and fell short of the Glory of God. I think we should just look upward to where our help comes from, the Lord.

The Bible says to forget the things that are behind you. The things you are holding on to from the past that are stealing your joy, making you sad, they are dead things. Unforgiveness, jealousy, envy, and past hurts are taking away from your future, your peace of mind. The past is over, let it go.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

People that think on what they lost, look backward. Don’t dwell there. You don’t live there anymore. People thinking on the future, look forward. Are you looking back at what you lost, or forward to what is to come? If you are trying to move forward, don’t let yourself be held back by people trying to keep you in the past. If they want to stay there let them, but you child of God need to move forward. You want to focus on the here and now, the future, not the past.

Isaiah 43:18-19 Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

You weren’t made to live in the cemetery nor lay with the corpses. You are a living being, a marvelous creation with a purpose, and a destiny to fulfill. You can’t do that if you are focused on the past. Life goes onward not backward.

Some have spent years dwelling on past hurts, unforgiveness, mistakes made, dead relationships, lost jobs, long gone friendships etc. You are wasting your time. It is holding you back, and keeping you from your future.  Some have missed God’s plan because they won’t let the past go. Satan would love to keep you in the past making you a slave. Don’t spend any more time on these dead things of yesterday. Don’t let the hurts, and failures of the past define you. Focus on where you are headed not where you have been.  Keep your eyes on Jesus.

Right now God is calling you. He is saying I’m not mad at you. I love you. I’m not interested in your past, I’m interested in your future. You may think you have done something you can’t be forgiven for. Not true. God said I set before you life or death choose life. His grace (undeserved favor) is hope for the hopeless.

Romans 8:1 there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Jesus died for all sin, and the hurts of our past. Ask the Lord to help you to move forward, to put your past behind you.

Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows… But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities…

God Bless. Heal the brokenhearted, bind up all their wounds.
