The Message-Pride and Arrogance

1 Samuel 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

Pride: A feeling or deep satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements. The quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself or one’s own importance.

Synonyms: arrogance, haughtiness, vanity, self-love, narcissism, egotism, conceitedness.

Arrogance: An insulting way of thinking or behaving that comes from believing that you are better, smarter, or more important than other people.

Synonyms: conceit, pride, self-importance, egotism.

If you think you don’t need this message, you should probably pay close attention to what it says. Pride is trusting in your own strength.

1 Corinthians 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. Be careful trusting in your own righteousness. We are the righteousness of God only through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 10:17, 12:1 When a person is humble not proud, then humility is demonstrated when he recognizes a mistake, listens to another’s correction and learns life’s lessons.

It is hard for the proud to accept this discipline. Pride puts self, first. Truly humble people acknowledge that others have something to teach them about life. We have everything to learn from God and nothing to teach Him.

Pride is trusting only in your own wisdom. You don’t listen to others. No one can correct you. You think you are smarter than everyone else. Insecurity is the root of pride. Insecurity is in your soul (mind, will, emotions) and must be healed.

Pride always has to have a voice, always wants to be heard, to give an opinion and often interrupts others while they are speaking. I used to have a bad problem with all of these examples of pride. For years I can look back and see where I was full of pride. Now, I have put off the old man and put on the new. Thank Jesus for that.

When you allow pride in your life, you have opened a door for the enemy to come into. He will come. He will use the opportunity you have given him to bring you down. It is a trap. Arrogance often accompanies pride.

Isaiah 2:11 Human pride will be brought down, and human arrogance will be humbled.

The strong and wise can fall into the trap if you don’t trust in God’s strength. A key theme in Isaiah is the Lord will be exalted, and humble people will be restored, while proud and mighty people are humbled.

Isaiah 26:5 He humbles the proud and brings down the arrogant city. He brings it down to the dust.

God sometimes will bring rebellious people to the end of themselves, by allowing them to experience their own brokenness and their own inability to make their lives work. He humbles them so they can see they need Him.

Job is an example of pride in the Bible. Job was righteous in his own eyes. Job lost everything, his land, wealth, health and all of his children. He was brought low, to the end of himself. It was only through God that he was restored.

Job 32:2 …against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

He is full of himself thinking it is his own self that is justified.

Job 33:9 I am clean without transgression. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.

Job sees it as all about what he has done, not what God has done. We are only righteous by the blood of Jesus, not in what we do. It is pride to think it is of ourselves. In 31 chapters of Job, he thinks it is himself, not God.

You have to become more confident in Jesus and not yourself. Get into Jesus’ presence and allow Him to do a work in your heart.

Many of us have pride in our lives. I want to be free of pride. I pray every morning that God help me keep pride and arrogance away, and to keep me humble.

John 14:13-14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son, if you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

I can’t do anything without Jesus. If I did it wouldn’t be my best and probably wouldn’t turn out good. I want God’s blessing and approval in everything I do. I need His help every step of the way. I can do nothing without Him and do not want to do anything without Him leading, guiding and teaching me.

If you are dealing with pride, arrogance, insecurity, disappointment, pornography, unforgiveness, addiction, hurt, no matter what it is, God has a healing for you. God knows what you are going through. The Bible promises He will bind up the brokenhearted and comfort all who mourn. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Don’t give up if it doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes you have to go through a process. Read God’s Word and pray in order to walk out this healing. God is faithful and He will do it as you trust Him.

I walked through a healing process through the grace of God. You have to let God heal you and make you what He wanted you to be all along. He heals us and uses us through our testimony to help others, to bring others into God’s healing power.

I encourage you to allow God to be your healer and restorer. The Lord has done such an amazing work in my life. God can do something with your life greater than you ever imagined.

God Bless. Heal the brokenhearted, bind up all their wounds.
