The Message-Sacrifice Nov 2018

In the Old Testament animal sacrifices had to be made to God for the forgiveness of sins.

Psalm 118:27 Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.

Today we don’t have to sacrifice animals on the altar because of what Jesus did on the cross for us. Jesus is the sacrifice.

To sacrifice means the giving up of one’s own interests or wishes in order to help others or to advance a cause.

You can’t live for God without sacrifice. God requires it. The Holy Spirit will change and transform us because, when we accepted Jesus as Lord, our hearts were changed. We no longer want to sin. We bind the sacrifice…to the horns of the altar. We want to be more like Jesus who sacrificed His life for the love of others.

Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself is the greatest sacrifice made. He gives us forgiveness of sins and eternal life because of His sacrifice. He always did the will of the Father and He considered Himself as a sacrifice.

Jesus taught us sacrifice in His own words when He said He came into this world not to be served but to serve others. We must allow Jesus’ life of serving and always giving to be our example. We must learn to be givers instead of just receivers. We must sacrifice our time, money, praise, worship, talents etc. Instead of bound by ropes on the altar of sacrifice, as in the Old Testament, we should be bound by God’s love for others.

John 13:15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

Paul tells us to be a living sacrifice.

Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Your faith and spirituality will prosper as you do God’s will that always requires sacrifice. As followers of Jesus we serve others. We give of ourselves, our love, our time, energy and money, therefore we sacrifice.

Will you sacrifice for Jesus?

Paul said:

Acts 20:35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: It is more blessed to give then to receive.

Lord open our hearts that we may take the time to meet the needs of others. May we love with our actions and not just our words. May the world see You in our actions as we sacrifice our time, energy, praise and finances.

Matthew 25:40 The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

God bless. Heal the brokenhearted, bind up all their wounds.
