The Message-The Cross Divides May 2019

The cross divides people into the saved and those who are lost. Jesus hung on the middle cross between two thieves. The thieves are described as evildoers. The thieves were being crucified for their crimes. They were thugs, sinful men, hanging on their crosses next to the sacrificial Lamb of God who had committed no crime or sin whatsoever.

On one side of Jesus was a wicked unrepentant sinner who went to his death insulting, mocking and ridiculing Jesus. It didn’t have to be that way, but he chose it by rejecting Jesus as Lord and Savior. Jesus hung right next to him. He heard the same words the other thief heard. Jesus would have forgiven him if he would only believe, but he did not. He went to his death as an unbeliever, unforgiven and is still in hell to this very day. He’s been in hell for over 2,000 years now.

Luke 23:39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!

On the other side of Jesus hung a wicked sinner who mocked and ridiculed Jesus. Before he died he acknowledged that he was guilty of his crimes but that Jesus was innocent of his crimes and didn’t deserve to die. He believed in Jesus, was forgiven and received salvation through Jesus’ love, grace and mercy. At the last moments of his life on earth he was washed clean of his sins. It wasn’t too late for Jesus to forgive him. His sins although like scarlet weren’t so many he couldn’t be forgiven. He was not too far gone to receive the salvation of Jesus Christ. Because of the promises of Jesus, he is in heaven today.

Luke 23:42-43 Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.  Jesus answered him, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.

Jesus was numbered, same as the thieves.

Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Luke 22:37 Jesus said: It is written: And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.

Not one word of anger or sinful speech came from the mouth of Jesus as He hung on the cross, knowing He was innocent of all wrong doing. He knew His mission was to die, to save us from our sins. He could have gotten down from the cross at any given time but he didn’t. He could have called thousands of angels to come.

The Bible says God will send ONE Angel to place Satan in the pit. Only one Angel. Imagine what Jesus could have done with a legion of angels which is thousands while on the cross. He could have come down at any time He chose. But He chose to die for our sins because He loves us.

Revelation 20:1-3 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him…

He chose to suffer and die so we could be in relationship with Him. That is only possible through forgiveness of sins for God is holy, holy, holy and we are certainly not. We must accept what Jesus has done for us as our Lord and Savior and believe in Him.

1 Peter 2:22 He committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

The repentant thief feared God and didn’t want to die with his sin and face judgement. He didn’t earn salvation, nor did he deserve it. Neither do we. The thief placed his life into a bleeding Jesus’ hands. He found His Savior on a cross, bleeding and dying. Little did he know Jesus was dying so he and us could have forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Praise Jesus. Jesus died and was raised to life. The thief went to heaven by the grace of God.

Luke 23:39-43 Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise.

The unrepentant thief died in his sins and the repentant thief died to his sins because he received Jesus. All the while Jesus was there on that cross dying for our sins. The cross divides.

Many are like the unrepentant thief. They don’t think they need a Savior. They don’t think their sins are so bad. They prefer to live in worldly pleasure which is living for yourself and not for God.

Romans 3:10 There is none righteous, no not one.

At the cross is where it is determined where you will spend eternity. It will be either in hell with Satan or in heaven with Jesus. The cross surely divides people into these two groups.

When your time comes to an end, Jesus wants you to be with Him in Paradise/Heaven. Do you know Jesus as Lord and Savior? Do you believe He died for your sins? Do you have eternal life?  Will you come to the cross and repent of your sins and receive Jesus Christ as Lord? Or will you reject Him like the unrepentant thief on the cross?

The cross divides people, those who are repentant and those who are unrepentant. The repentant have Jesus as Lord and Savior and will spend eternity in heaven with Him. The unrepentant will die in their sins and spend eternity in hell.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

God bless. Heal the brokenhearted, bind up all their wounds.
